In 1976, with the support of several Townships in Frontenac County, the North Frontenac Community Arena opened at Godfrey.

Over the years, the Arena (now Frontenac Community Arena) has provided a place for young and old alike to gather and engage in sporting and recreational activities.

Most notably, it has given young people in Central and South Frontenac Townships, and surrounding area, the chance to Dream Big.

The Frontenac Community Arena has been the place where many hockey dreams began, including those of:

  • Marty Abrams, a 1983 draft pick by the NHL’s Washington Capitals, who goaltended for the Toronto Marlboros, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Formerly a scout with the NHL’s Central Scouting Bureau, Abrams served as Coach of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds during the 2003-04 OHL season.

  • Mike Smith, a 2001 draft pick by the NHL’s Dallas Stars, whose goaltending skills brought his Phoenix Coyotes to the Western Conference Finals of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs. A member of Canada’s gold medal winning team at the 2014 Winter Olympics at Sochi, Russia, Smith was Canada's starting goalie at the 2015 World Championships, going 10-0 through the tournament and recording a shutout streak of 190:03 in the medal round (final three games).

  • Trevor Stienburg, selected 15th overall in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft, and who played 74 regular season games with the NHL’s Quebec Nordiques. He was the Head Coach of the Saint Mary’s University Huskies for 23 years, stepping down in June of 2020, Stienburg guided his players to both Atlantic University Conference and National University championships over his time as Head Coach.

The Frontenac Community Arena remains an important part of the area, and a place where those with passion and desire can Dream Big for years to come.
